The Centre for Research and Technology-Hellas (CERTH) founded in 2000 is one of the leading research centres in Greece and listed among the TOP-20 E.U. research institutions with the highest participation in competitive research grants. CERTH has important scientific and technological achievements in many areas including: Energy, Environment, Industry, Mechatronics, Information & Communication, Transportation & Sustainable Mobility, Health, Agro-biotechnology, Smart farming, Safety & Security, as well as several cross-disciplinary scientific areas.

The Institute of Bio-Economy and Agri-Technology (iBO), a non-profit research and technological development organization, is from 2013 one of the five Institutes of the Center for Research and Technology – Hellas (CERTH) administered by the Ministry of Education, Religions Affairs and Long Life Learning. The Institute was initially established in 2006 as a research center in the scientific areas of i) Mechatronics, ii) Agrotechnology, iii) Biomedicine, and iv) Kinesiology.

iBO philosophy lays on a multiple-disciplinary approach toward the development and advancement of technologies dedicated to the bio-production systems domain, including crop production, livestock, and fisheries, under the external framework of economic development, welfare, and environmental impact alleviation, while in parallel it generates new technological paradigms shift for other domains. In the integration process within CERTH, iBO is redeployed generating a new identity oriented to the agri-technologies and bio-systems engineering scientific domains by integrating the existing scientific niches and research units orchestrated towards one scope.
